Amenities at Hassalo

While there’s always a new venue or restaurant to check out in and around NE Portland where Hassalo on Eighth stands, the rain and cold weather coming from Oregon’s autumn makes leaving home less appealing. Hassalo’s amenities are unique to each individual building on the block: Aster Tower, Velomor and the Elwood Building. Whichever building you’re in, there’s a space you can go to relax, gather, work, or simply just be. Although we want you to feel at home in your apartment, it’s important for Hassalo residents to share space and break bread together now and then, and the amenity spaces are built for exactly that.

The Elwood Building

Hassalo’s smallest mid-rise building is inspired by earthy, natural elements. Even the hallway carpets are printed to look like PNW moss. With sustainability in mind, the Elwood rain gutters collect in the Courtyard and naturally water the landscaping. The boardwalk-like pathways make it feel more like a park than the city center. The outdoor space sets right up against the Lloyd 700 building, one of the east side’s tallest buildings, so you can walk in greenery through the courtyard, and look up to the contrast of an urban jungle. There’s also a community room on Elwood’s fifth floor, with a lounge, outdoor deck space and a ping pong table. Hassalo always factors in your furry friends too, and the Courtyard hosts a fenced pet relief area so you don’t have to rely on the streets for their business. Elwood may rest in the heart of the city, but the building’s forest theme creates an atmosphere of quiet, natural beauty against the concrete bustle of Portland.

Velomor

The name for Hassalo’s other mid-rise is derived from Latin roots, meaning “The Love of Bikes”. That’s what Velomor is all about. The ground floor hosts a bike rack storage space with plenty of slots for newcomers and current residents alike. There are multiple spots within Velomor to relax and hang out too. The ground floor is home to the Peloton Lounge, a fully furnished living space and large kitchen with  floor to ceiling windows that actually fold like an accordion and can be opened in the warmer months. From the Lounge extends the courtyard, a cute turf lawn with dining tables/chairs, and two large barbeques for Summer grilling. The pet relief is situated not far from the Courtyard, right off the exit for our Pet Lounge: a full grooming station with deep sinks and floor drains to bathe your fur babies. Velomor has a mid-century feel throughout, and the Courtyard’s campy green lawn and ambient lighting resembles sitting in a suburban backyard during the 1960’s. Finally, the Velomor ground floor completes it’s versitile utility with the gym, supplied with everything you need for weight lifting to cardio. That’s not all Velomor has to offer: the Eco-Terrace on the sixth floor is just as, if not more noteworthy than Velomor’s other lounge spaces. Here, paths are constructed through beds of sustainable plant life to grow and thrive. Adirondack chairs sit neatly at the end of the deck, creating a foreground for the view from a higher vantage point. The Oregon Convention Center‘s glass towers are only blocks from Hassalo, and make the Eco-Terrace view unique to this part of Portland. It’s not uncommon to find residents pouring wine and sharing dinner in the Summer evenings on the Eco-Terrace, watching the sun set against the peaks and points of nearby city relics.

Aster Tower

The Star of Hassalo (literally, Aster is Greek for Star) and favorite among touring parties. At 21 floors, Aster’s height meets some of the other taller buildings in the area, but because the east side is not as vertically sprawling, the view from the top is truly superior to any in Portland. Not only is the whole entirety of Portland’s west side visible, but the 21st floor deck extends around the building, giving a clear view of the South and East sides of Portland as well. Not just Portland either, from the East facing end of the building, the Columbia River Gorge, Mt. Hood, and Mt. St. Helens are all visible on clear, sunny days. The view is supreme, and is truly one of a kind, especially since most PDX high-rise living is settled on the West side, competing with each other for the skyline. From the 21st floor deck, you can also read a book on the lounge furniture, grill your dinner, or enjoy the warmth of the fire pit that burns against the south side sky line. Going inside of Aster 21 doesn’t disappoint either. The Capella Lounge is a sprawling space with a full kitchen, living space, and dining tables. Whether you want to relax and watch a game on TV, or work on your laptop, the Lounge is perfect for any leisure. On the other end of the 21st is the large gym, with cardio equipment facing the stunning 180 views. The Nova Spa sits at the center of the 21st floor, with a full jacuzzi, sauna and cold plunge. The best part? The floor to ceiling windows feature views facing North and East, with full mountain views. If the Tower’s top floor isn’t impressive enough, the full package room with parcel pending and bike storage is a hidden necessity around a busy high-rise.

Typically, property’s amenities are the little extras that make the living experience special. At Hassalo, the amenities were built to be more than a little extra, they are intended to be extensions of the home, a place where residents can find community and connection. That’s what makes the Hassalo experience remarkable: stunning views, shared living spaces, and the opportunity to meet your neighbors all within the walls of your building. Factor in each amenity space is supplied with an automatic espresso machine, whipping up a latte or cappuccino in the morning hours for you to enjoy with that skyline view. Of course, Hassalo’s apartments are tailored to fit any kind of personality, but the ability to also choose the right perks to fit your living situation is a unique bonus not found in most apartment hunting.
