Urban Water Conservation: How We Go Green in the City

By: Management

If you have visited our community or leased with us, chances are good that you’ve heard about NORM, our natural wastewater treatment, re-use and disposal system. In short, the system recycles 100 percent of the black and grey water used at our community. It creates non-potable water for toilet flushing, irrigation and air conditioning. What makes NORM even cooler? It’s the largest (and only) urban-scale residential wastewater treatment and reuse system in all of North America.

Meet NORM: Hassalo on Eighth’s Ticket to Urban Water Conservation

If you’ve visited our community or leased with us, chances are good that you’ve heard about NORM, our natural wastewater treatment, re-use and disposal system (otherwise known as a Natural Organic Recycling Machine). In short, this urban water conservation system recycles 100 percent of the black and grey water used at our community. It creates non-potable water for toilet flushing, irrigation and air conditioning. What makes NORM even cooler? It’s the largest (and only) urban-scale residential wastewater treatment and reuse system in all of North America.

How NORM Helps the Environment:

  • Treats roughly 47,000 gallons of water a day, reducing our contribution to the city’s sewer system significantly.
  • Gives back to the landscape by creating non-potable water used for irrigation.
  • Doesn’t generate any waste of its own. Biosolids are used for fertilizer off-site, and fats, oils and gases are used for fuel.
  • Reduces water usage for our buildings by 33 percent, or 7,300,000 gallons of water per year.

How NORM Helps You:

  • As a resident, you could experience significant savings on the water/sewer portion of your utility bill.
  • Enjoy being part of the change as we work together to create an EcoDistrict in the heart of the city.
  • Reduce your carbon footprint – just by living here!

Read about NORM in the News:

As many know, sustainability is of paramount importance to us here at Hassalo on Eighth. This is just one of the many ways in which we embrace the “green” lifestyle. We are extremely excited to have brought NORM to life and our sustainability efforts to another level. Just think: You could reduce your carbon footprint just by living here. W

Crafty Wonderland

About Crafty Wonderland

Crafty Wonderland is simply what happened when two Portland artists, Cathy and Torie, decided to create a venue where they could sell their own handmade goods and help friends do the same. Both were members of the all-ladies craft collective Portland Super Crafty, and together they conjured up all the things they’d want in a perfect Portland fair: regularly scheduled, indoors, juried, with a kids’ area for budding artists and a free DIY section where artists teach guests how to work their crafty magic. Thanks to immense community support, this vision became not only a reality, but a huge success. Shoppers and vendors flock to our colossal spring and holiday craft market in the spirit of celebrating all things handmade. It turns out, shoppers and tourists are super inspired by the creativity of Portlanders. They love it so much that the Portland Business Alliance and Portland Development Commission asked them to participate in their downtown pop-up shop program for the 2010 holidays. The temporary, 10-week long pop-up went so well, they decided to keep it going. They leased the space next door and set up Crafty Wonderland’s retail shop so that visitors can always get their handcrafted fix with goods and art made exclusively by Portland artists. Now people can meet the makers and own something unique that can’t be bought in a big box store, and they can stop in anytime (that they’re open, of course).
